“You know what I just realized?” I looked up from the police report and pictures taken ten years ago after the vehicular accident. “We’ve spoken to Marta’s best friend…but we’ve never spoken to Lena’s best friend.”

Alex stood, walked over to the coffeepot, and poured himself another cup. “That’s because Marta’s best friend, Christine Mossman, is supposedly the person responsible for taking revenge and killing Greta Twinkle.”

“And hearing you say that statement out loud,” I said, “tells me how ridiculous it now seems for Christine Mossman to be the killer.”

“I have to agree,” Grant said. “Our other suspects have more motive for wanting revenge than Christine does.”

“I know it’s what we think,” Alex said, “but what can we prove?” He shook his head and sighed. “And our job isn’t to prove Christine is innocent. Our own investigation has led us to Christine.”

I held up my hand. “Just hear me out. What harm can come from talking to Lena’s bestie? I mean, maybe she can clear up the whole grocery store time lapse. Maybe after going to the grocery store and buying groceries, Lena stopped by to see her best friend? That’s where she was for the missing hour and a half?”

Alex nodded. “You’re right. We need to make sure we’ve answered all the questions before PADA comes and takes Christine away.”

I stood and grabbed my cell phone off Grant’s desk. “Who wants to take a trip to see Lena’s best friend?”

“Do we even know who she is?” Grant asked. “From what you’ve said about Lena’s husband, Bernard, he’s not just going to hand over Lena’s best friend’s name.”

“Please, that’s what I have Mom and GiGi for.” I pulled up Mom’s contact information. “Mom’ll know who Lena’s best friend was.”

Ten minutes later, Alex, Needles, and I were armed not only with the name of Lena’s friend, but also an address, thanks to Mom and GiGi. Grant was on his way over to talk to Lena’s niece one more time.

Bleu Faeman lived fifteen miles east of town, deep in the forest. We ended up having to ditch Alex’s Blazer and walk the thirty feet to Bleu’s magnificent cabin and fairy garden.

“These winter flowers are amazing.” I stopped to admire the winter pansies, snowdrops, and snapdragons lining the walkway and hanging from pots from the front porch. “Absolutely beautiful.”

“Thank you.”

I spun around and saw a petite woman dressed in a sage green frock and black leggings. Her dainty hands were wrapped around a mug of steaming liquid.

“Good afternoon,” I said. “I’m Shayla Loci, and this is Sheriff Stone. We’d like to come in and ask you a couple questions, if we could?”

“Mercy, yes.” She pushed open the screen door with her elbow. “I know you, child. Your mother and I exchange herbs for spells sometimes. And looky here…is that the famous Needles everyone talks about?”

Needles leaped off my shoulder, his wings glowing purple and silver, and gave a flourishing bow.

“Such a surprise to have you all here today,” Bleu went on as she ushered us into her cluttered kitchen.
